My favorite area to dine in Philly is in the old Olde City section. Fez, Tangerine, Bluezette are all great places. Go to Digitalcity.com and look up the restaurants in Philly. They give you the pricing info and a brief summary of each restaurant (the food ,the ambiance the friendliness of the staff.....)

McCormick & Schmick's, on Broad Street, is really good, not too expensive. I like the Melting Pot too, but find it to be expensive. There's one on Filbert Street as well as in Chestnut Hill. Go to China town and ask a fireman (or policeman) where you should have dinner. My mom and her sisters do this everywhere and have never had a bad meal. I really like Reading Terminal for lunch, tons of food stalls. The Amish ladies are there Thurs-Sat and their food is fabulous. Genos in South Philly for cheesesteaks.

Lot's of terrific restaurants in Philly...depends what type of food you're looking for.
Two of my All-Time favorites:
-Harmony, an all Vegetarian Chinese restaurant in the Chinatown section (be sure to order a meat-dish made with veggie ingredients you'll never believe aren't real meat)
-Fez, a terrific Moroccan restaurant...go for the traditional Feast and wear pants with room.
If you would rather not plan ahead and just go for it, the best place to stumble across a restaurant is in the area of 2nd and Chestnut to 2nd and South st.

The Chart House is good for fish/seafood and has nice atmosphere overlooking the Delaware River. Maggio's Little Italy is good for Italian( around 12th & Chestnut) and Ralph's in S. Philly is excellent for Italian food.

The Imperial Inn (Chinese) 10th and Race. I love the walnut shrimp! Lehamans Tavern--south of airport in Essington. Birch beer on tap. Descent food, not expensive--local place. Of course, Geno's or Pat's for cheesesteaks! Check out places in the old city, too.

I noticed that many of the responses do not really address your question, and some reponses actually steer you wrong.

Ishkabibbles. Yes, the name is weird, but the cheese steak is fantastic! It is very small, but the food is great...and why have a Philly cheese steak while in Philly! mmmmmm
